3 Places for a Weekend Getaway Near San Francisco

3 Places for a Weekend Getaway Near San Francisco

Are your four walls starting to feel like a cell? Want to get away just for a few days? Consider these northern California towns. A weekend getaway from San Francisco is as close as your car. Here are 3 places for a weekend getaway near San Francisco.

Paso Robles – 3 hour getaway from San Francisco

Paso Robles is the perfect spot for those who are tired of the gimmicky Napa or Sonoma regions. This is central Cali’s wine country anchor and takes just three hours to get to along the 101. In the late 90s there were only 50 wineries and today there’s nearly 300, most of which offer opulent tasting rooms, just remember to call ahead. Some of the best wines in the region are their Pinot Noir and Zinfandel varieties. For a great place to stay, consider the Paso Robles Inn. Some rooms have hot tubs on the balcony with water brought in by the area’s hot springs.

Point Reyes – 1 hour getaway from San Francisco

Point Reyes is another prime spot for a weekend getaway. If the traffic isn’t horrible, it’s only about an hour along the Pacific Coast from San Francisco. Point Reyes is a national park and home to the Point Reyes Lighthouse. If you think you’ll climb inside the lighthouse, be sure to bring comfortable shoes – sandals if you want to trek the entirety of Great Beach. It’s 11 miles long. It’s an Instagrammable slice of heaven – sand that literally goes on for miles, awe-inspiring cliffs, waves crashing the shore. It’s truly magnificent. For your overnighting, consider Nick’s Cove, a line of comfy cottages at Tomales Bay and right on the water.

Santa Cruz – 2 hour getaway from San Francisco

Just a two-hour drive out of San Francisco, you’ll find the artsy, unconventional town of Santa Cruz. It has all the “feels” of the classic beach town, such as the old, wood pier that juts out of the boardwalk. It’s one of the country’s last surviving beach amusement parks having first opened to the public in 1907. Surfers love it here, too. One of the best places to catch a wave is at Pleasure Point. And you can whale-watch, too, as well as scout for sea lions and otters. The University of California – Santa Cruz campus is lively, and the culture here is welcoming to all, namely the LGBTQ community. Check out the frenzied nightlife at places like Blue Lounge.

A weekend getaway is as close as your car – get out there and enjoy the country to explore these 3 places for a weekend getaway near San Francisco.
