You Need to Visit These Lakes Near Yosemite National Park

You Need to Visit These Lakes Near Yosemite National Park

Visiting Lake Tahoe? Maybe taking a trip to see Yosemite National Park? While some activities at the lakes between these two destinations can only be enjoyed at certain times throughout the year, there are activities year-round that make these lakes worth a visit. You need to visit these lakes near Yosemite National Park.

Topaz Lake

At the border of California and Nevada, Topaz Lake is a perfect fishing hole for those looking to hook rainbow and brown trout – but don’t forget to get a fishing license first. Remember – Topaz Lake, mostly due to its location, is a very strong wind area which can pose some challenges, especially for fishing from shore. It’s a popular lake for boaters, but campers still hunt for great shoreline fishing, too.

If you enjoy other activities, on the northeast side of the lake has a park that’s perfect for boating, jet skiing, and other water-based fun. Finally, on the west side of the lake you’ll find casinos, fine dining establishments, and luxury accommodations.

Mono Lake

Ever wanted to visit a really old lake? In this case, old doesn’t mean “going grey” but rather “had enough time to get crystal clear”. Mono Lake’s crystal waters reflect the Sierra Nevada mountains. One of the lake’s greatest features is Tufa Towers. These “towers” form when the freshwater springs below bubble up into the alkalinity of the lake. The lake’s saltwater hosts many species of shrimp which attract various migratory bird species, making it a haven for nature lovers of all kinds, such as photographers and birdwatchers.

Mammoth Lake

Finally, the great Mammoth Lake offers year-round hot springs. Mammoth Mountain’s past eruptions created multiple underground hot water networks. But you’ll also find waterfalls that create mid-air rainbows, hot creeks, and even the national monument Devil’s Post Pile.

After the summer warmth melts away the last of the snowfall, Devil’s Post Pile becomes accessible, along with the Rainbow Falls and trails into Yosemite. In the fall, the crowds die down and this is a place of quiet wonder.

You need to visit these lakes near Yosemite National Park to truly appreciate the natural beauty of each one.
