Beautiful Beaches on the West Coast

When you think of “beach” and “West Coast”, your mind likely falls immediately on California—but there’s so much more to this coastal area than just the Golden State. In fact, saltwater and sea air flows up the western coast from California all the way to Washington State. And while the entire coast has bright lights and colorful cities always buzzing with activity, sometimes you want a getaway that’s far from the fast pace of city life. That’s why these two areas are at the top of our West Coast beautiful beach list. If you enjoy charming small-town living, quaint cottages, and the real history of a place, consider these beaches on your next vacation.

Carmel-by-the-Sea perhaps is most famous for the celebrities that have graced its sidewalks, such as former mayor, Clint Eastwood. Author Jack London also enjoyed his time here. Creatives have always flocked to this charming seaside town, but it’s always held onto its down-home charms. The downtown area is small and completely walkable. The cobblestone streets are reminiscent of fairy tales, lined with art galleries, coffee shops, and restaurants known for their wines. The cottages appear almost magical, hiding secret gardens and floral courtyards. To experience the town’s beauty from higher elevations, or to explore the coves, add Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and the Carmel River State Beach to your itinerary.

Further up the coast in evergreen Washington state is a tiny island town called Friday Harbor. From Seattle, you can hop onto the ferry or catch a seaplane over to Friday Harbor. This isn’t a Mediterranean, exotic island, but rather a natural, untouched beach type of vibe. Instead of souvenir shops you’ll find independent bookshops. Instead of big-name, chain restaurants, you’ll find independent chefs. The backdrop of the Olympic Mountains is only made sweeter by the scent and sight of the island’s lavender farm. Lime Kiln Point State Park offers coastal hiking and wildlife spotting, as well as a working lighthouse dating back to 1914.
