Where to Stay and Play in Portsmouth

September 1, 2022 //  by Great Vacations

Where to Stay and Play in Portsmouth

Portsmouth, New Hampshire is a charming small town with only 20,000 year-round residents. So, it might not be “big” in terms of population, but Portsmouth is big where it counts. It’s the perfect getaway for those looking to escape the usual touristy vibe of larger destinations. Let’s explore where to stay and play in Portsmouth.

The city gets its name from its location at the mouth of Piscataqua River, and aptly has the water-based adventures to live up to its name. Oh, and don’t forget the seafood!

If you’re arrive via Boston’s Logan Airport, you’ll have a short but sweet drive of less than an hour to reach nautical Portsmouth. The town has charming, walkable streets, an interesting history, greenery in shades you’ve never seen, and tons of local boutiques, diners, antique shops, and bookstores.

The town is right on the border between New Hampshire and Maine and was incorporated as a town in 1653. Much of the town’s original colonial architecture is still standing with more than 70 historical sites you can visit on foot or by bike or boat.

In the Market Square district, the Portsmouth Brewing Company began over 140 years ago. Inside this iconic building is the Ale House Inn, one of the best places to stay in the city. You can easily walk to nearby diners, clubs, and shopping centers, and take in all the history along the way. In the hotel lobby, you’ll find a bottomless carafe of cold-brew coffee — if you’re planning on hitting up some of the pubs in town, this is the perfect pick-me-up, before or after.

In downtown Portsmouth, Prescott Park offers 10-acres of pristine waterfront to play. Prescott Park runs alongside the river and you can get there by bike. You’ll find several activities offered at the park throughout the summer, such as the Prescott Park Arts and Crafts Festival.

New Hampshire boasts 18 miles of lovely New England coastline, which you can stroll upon entrance to Odiorne Point State Park. Picnic tables are found throughout the park, as are the sights and smells of the ocean.

Where will you cast your anchor to stay and play in Portsmouth?
